Detecting Hacking

by Brent Kirkpatrick

(Date Published: .)

Detecting hacking requires consideration of time-series events.

Hacking occurs over the course of some time-period and produces various changes to the state of a computer. In some cases these changes in state are events that can be analyzed using statistics.

Changes in computer state that might constitute events can sometimes be collected as data. Data that is collected needs to pass quality control, needs to have a known origin, and needs to be analyzed with rigorous methods.

The addition of time-series information means that some of the data may need to be corrected for time discrepancies. This involves a number of new research directions, as science is only begining to discover how to collect these data.
